Taking Justin’s legal advice, I filled out the application to be a member of AFGE and left it with his assistant the next day. Since it was Friday and the kids were with their father, I decided to meet up with Amber after work for happy hour off of U Street. Amber did legal work in the public sector and her father is also a lawyer, so I wanted to get her advice on if I should talk to a lawyer about what I’ve been experiencing within NPPD.

Circling around 14th and U, I forgot just how jam packed the corridor could get during this time with all of the hip lounge spots right on U Street. I found parking with a two-hour timeframe and a block walk to Lost Society. Amber was already sitting by the time I walked past security and up the three flights of steps to the rooftop bar.

“His name is Anwir Hustle,” Amber said to me as she handed me a rectangular business card once I settled down with my drink. The rectangular business card featured a light-skinned man with heavy eyebrows and a faded, yet crooked line up. He seemed legit in his dark blue suit with some circular logo that seemed a little familiar to me, pinned in his forward-facing photo. I looked down at the card trying to figure out more of what I could read just by looking at his picture.

“Tell him that Amber, Jamel’s friend Amber, referred you,” she said as she went on to tell me about her stay at the earlier agency I had left. Amber stood about five feet, two inches, with fair brown skin and long black hair. Although she was only nine years older than me, she really came off as a sister, so we bonded more on our experiences while constantly brainstorming ways to overcome them. On most of our happy hour sessions, we talked more about our relationships and her marriage as she and her husband were enjoying their childless marriage, while I dealt with the headache of dating in the DMV.

“Girl! Let me tell you!” she continued as she sipped from her stemless glass of Merlot. “This job has been such a mess. First, my supervisor keeps giving me more work without me completing my current tasks. Then she had the audacity to tell me that I was doing a poor job and that I needed to do better. We just began the beginning of this fiscal year so she knows how hectic it is – what more does she want from me?!”

“What? How? None of that makes sense,” I said as I sipped my wine.

“I don’t know. She is always doing stuff to mess with me. I am going crazy. If I do not do one thing, then it is another. She is picking on me for everything. I love the budget, but I need to get back on the legal side of the house. I think she’s forgetting I’m just filling in until we hire a finance analyst.
